In this experiment, students can enhance their experimental skills and deepen their understanding of the law of refraction. Alongside observing the incident light at the air-glass boundary, the path of the light beam is determined and assessed using a semi-graphical procedure. This way, the significance of mathematics in understanding physics can be demonstrated. The experiment requires students to have strong experimental skills, with good results only achievable after careful adjustments and thorough evaluation. However, comparing the experimentally obtained refractive index (relative) with table values should give students the feeling of having obtained a relatively accurate result despite simplified experimental conditions. The experiment can be profitably used even at the secondary school level, where the semi-graphical procedure can be supplemented by calculating the sine values for α and β, allowing the quantitative version of Snell's law of refraction to be determined.
